Museums Office Publishes First Collections Register

The Museums Office of the Velocity Interoperability Network today published the first register of the national collections. The register records 128,400 objects and specimens received from member organisations during the transition period, arranged in seven divisions: the founding collection of the Network, industry and engineering, maritime and survey, natural sciences, art, social and working life, and the library and archive.

Of the objects received, 41,286 have been catalogued to the Office's full standard and their records published, amounting to 32 per cent of the collections. Cataloguing of the remainder continues, and the register will be reissued each quarter until the whole of the collections has been recorded. During the transition period 6,940 condition assessments were completed and 412 objects were treated in the conservation studios.

Members of the public and researchers may ask the Office for the full record of any object in the register. From 18 January 2027, when the National Study Centre opens, objects not on display may be consulted in the study rooms by appointment. Enquiries and requests for access may be sent to contact@museums.gov.vin and are answered within ten working days.
